How to Do a Tri Sets Workout

Step-by-step Instructions

Here is what you need to do...
Step 1

So you've grown a little bit tired of the average ol' workout routine. I don't blame you- we all get there. The big question is, what other options are there? The simple answer is Many. The more specific answer, one which will kick your workouts into high gear and put some fun back in the word gym (trust me, those letters are in there somewhere) is Tri Sets.

Step 2

Tri Sets are a circuit of 3 exercises for a single muscle group. You pick two big, heavy exercises and one lighter exercise and go to town. In order to to a tri set the right way, you need to dispose of the idea of counting reps. You simply go after each exercise with maximum effort, and you take no rest between the three exercises in the circuit. After the circuit gets a run-through, take 120 seconds TOPS to rest. Then go after it again. 4 times through a circuit will be sufficient for any level of weight lifter. Below, I'll outline an example tri set circuit.

Step 3

Example tri set circuit: Chest 2 heavy exercises: Incline barbell bench press, decline barbell bench press 1 light exercise: Incline dumbbell flys You will do as many reps as possible for both of the heavy exercises, which will wear the muscle out completely. Afterwards, you'll hop right into the light exercise for as many reps as you've got left. Together, the three exercises will obliterate your muscles, leaving you very excited about the 120 seconds of rest. After 4 runs of the circuit, you can leave the gym with a massive pump and an even more massive feeling of accomplishment. These workouts only take about 45 minutes, so work hard and don't forget to have fun.

Special Attention

Difficulties people often experience or parts that need special attention to do it right.

Tri sets can be difficult because they demand a lot of endurance and strength from your muscles. Whenever I go after a tri sets workout I make sure to take MuscleTech preworkout beforehand. This preworkout gives me the intensity and focus to barrel through all 3 exercises in the circuit without slowing down one bit. As long as you bring your A-game, tri sets will be no problem.

Funny or interesting story about this topic...

One time I was doing a tri sets workout without preworkout. Man oh man did that turn out to be a difficult day. Half way through the second run of the circuit I found myself groaning because the pump was so intense. I could barely handle it. Some of my friends in the gym were looking at me like I was a crazy person. Maybe I was. Because I toughed it out and made it through all 4 runs of the circuit, and as I walked out of the gym I felt very conflicted. On one side I felt like hell because it was one of the hardest workouts of my entire life. On the other side, I felt like the man of all men. Once I made it through that workout, I knew that nothing could stand in my way. It isn't an experience that I want to replicate, but it certainly is one I'm proud to have pushed through and succeeded with.

When did you first do this & how did you get started?

I first started tri sets when I was in my freshman year of college. I'm always looking for ways to make the gym more fun, and when I found out about tri sets I couldn't pass the opportunity up. I had a bad time when I tried to do them without preworkout, but ever since then I've prepared adequately and I can never doubt the results. Tri sets are a lot of fun, a lot of work, and they have a lot of benefits. So use the knowledge from this tip and go after your first tri set workout. Keep it intense. Happy lifting
