How To Learn Basketball Driving Techniques
Step-by-step Instructions
Here is what you need to do...
Step 1
There are three key principles to remember when learning how to successfully drive past a defender.
Step 2
First, the lower player always wins. The lower and more violent you are as a ball handler, the better chance you will have to blow by your defender. The lower player always has the best leverage which allows them to control their defender with their body. You become a more powerful and effective driver of the basketball when you play low.
Step 3
Second, the player with the better balance always wins. As an offensive player, if you can get your defender off balance, you will have a good opportunity to take advantage of their instability. The key is to try and get your defender off balance by virtue of a shot fake or ball fake. Once they are out of position you will have a better chance of driving past them.
Step 4
Finally, the player with the longest first step always wins. When you make your move towards the basket, be sure to extend you step as far past the defender as possible. If you take an intermediate step when you start to make your move to the basket, you are only giving your defender a better chance to stay in front of you.
