How To Buy Custom Team Soccer Shorts

Step-by-step Instructions

Here is what you need to do...
Step 1

Presumably, you are reading this because you are new to coaching, are considering a change from your current uniform supplier, or you are an individual or parent who is buying one or two pairs of shorts. If you are buying for a team, or are new to ordering uniforms for a team, don't always buy what the other coaches are buying and don't let your program's lack of budget push you into ordering the cheapest garments.

Step 2

As always, don't be lazy with sizing, double-check your sizing requirements and if any players sizes have changed. Unforeseen problems happen, such as not receiving all the quantity of one size you need, or lost or damaged shorts - so be sure to order an ample quantity of extra shorts for the season.

Step 3

If you're buying custom soccer shorts, chances are you're looking to buy jerseys as well. Good news: You can frequently purchase them together to save a few bucks. In case this is your intention, the online shops that I suggest below sell both tops and bottoms. The first step is to decide whether you're buying universal shorts for the home and away games or just one pair for all of your team's matches.

Step 4

The important factors when buying shorts is comfort and length.

Step 5

Breathability is important because it allows your players to not get too hot.

Step 6

Length of shorts shouldn't only be a question of fashion. So, when deciding on the length of shorts for your team or yourself, don't only consider looking good. A few extra inches or centimeters of fabric on the quadriceps can be inhibitive to players when running and lifting their legs. Always buy mid-thigh, however different manufacturers have different ideas of length for mid-thigh. If you are in contact with a rep for an athletic apparel manufacturer, consider asking for samples and asking a player to try the sample out on the field. Don't wait until you open eight dozen pairs of shorts to discover they suck.

Step 7

Next what are your shorts going to look like? Are you going to put your players' numbers on the shorts? While this is far from mandatory, it does look pretty cool and goes a long way toward projecting an image of success. Will your shorts be multi-colored? Striped? Will they bear the team logo? These are all preferential questions, but each has potential to make a difference both on how your players view themselves and on the image they project.

Step 8

Besides comfort for players, looking good on the field can add to helping your program get a financial commitment / donation from that one extra booster... or build team pride in the community. So, while player comfort is your number one goal, be sure to consider secondary factors.

Step 9

This may seem like a no brainer, but make sure to consult your players before you make the final purchase. Though not necessarily on design questions, you will need to know what sizes they wear (as demonstrated by my experience above).

When did you first do this & how did you get started?

When I ordered my first pair of team shorts, I ordered them WAY too big. We had a tournament and I was constantly grabbing my drawstrings to make sure my shorts didn't completely fall off. It was awful. It's important to buy the right size of shorts, but it's also important to establish an image. Well customized shorts can do just that.
