How to buy ice hockey goalie knee pads

Step-by-step Instructions

Here is what you need to do...
Step 1

Step one in buying the right hockey goalie knee pads is to determine size. Size is often determined by age therefore young players up until the age of 12 will likely choose from the Youth of Junior selections, while most players 12+ select from the Adult or Senior selections.

Step 2

Step two in buying the right hockey goalie knee pads is compatibility. This is important as buying goalie knee pads that will not fit comfortably into your hockey goalie pads will pose a problem. Whether playing youth or senior hockey, your knee pad must fit snugly into the knee cup of the goalie pad when your goalie pads are fully strapped on. If this does not happen, or you are not comfortable, select another style or design until you find the right level of compatibility.

Step 3

Step three in buying the right hockey goalie knee pads is comfort. As mentioned in Step two, making sure that your knee pad is compatible is your primary concern, yet making sure you are comfortable wearing the knee pads while wearing full equipment is another important determining factor. Selections range from plastic protected to gel filled knee pads, therefore finding your comfort and compatibility level will then allow you to play your best hockey.

Step 4

Step four in buying the right hockey goalie knee pad is pricing. As with many other pieces of equipment, it is recommended to try on hockey goalie knee pads before you buy them. Therefore, your best option is try one multiple pairs while consulting the individual manufacturers size guide for best fit and results.

Special Attention

Difficulties people often experience or parts that need special attention to do it right.

Although there are many hockey specific goalie knee pads, there are many other forms of knee pads available. Often times, choosing goalie knee pads can be a personal choice, so if no hockey specific knee pad is compatible or comfortable, you may consider other knee pads. So long as the non-hockey specific knee pads have a snug fit, are compatible and comfortable while your hockey goalie pads are fully strapped on, you should be fine.

Funny or interesting story about this topic...

Knee pads served as the precursor to actual goalie pads yet are still used today in conjunction with modern equipment. The evolution of their purpose has taken them from merely being for protection to adding comfort, stability and support. As modern day goalie are constantly bending and dropping to the ice on their knees, goalie knee pads are now used to reinforce goalie pads. By using knee pads in tandem with goalie pads, goaltenders are offered added protection from knee damage as well superior support than by using goalie pads only.

When did you first do this & how did you get started?

As a player, I never fully understood how goaltenders could play so well while wearing the amount of equipment they do. That is, until I spoke to my friend who played goal for our team at the time. Among other things, I was very curious as to why he would always wear two sets of pads on his legs; his knee pads and his goalie pads? It seemed a bit cumbersome and bulky, having to double up around the knee, I thought that it would compromise his mobility. Ironically, my goaltenders answered that it was actually quite the opposite as the addition of the knee pads to his goalie pads made him feel more secure in his movements. The added flexibility, protection and spring gained from the knee pads, at least in the eyes of my goaltender, was a boost to his confidence and made him more secure in "attacking" the shooter. Needless to say, I wasn't about to question him as he continued to lead us to victory.
