Photographers Shoot Many Images To Get One Good Photo

By Shawn Petrovich of Totally Ripped of Los Angeles, which specializes in photography and video of fitness models.

Model photographers have a rule of thumb that surprises most new male models: Expect only one excellent photo per roll. While several hundred photos may be created during a photo shoot, male models should expect that only a few excellent quality photos to catch the eye.
A photographer may expose several rolls of film for each scene. Each roll of film contains 36 photos.
A photo shoot may involve multiple scenes. For example, one scene may involve the model against a wall. A second scene may show the model laying in bed. Each scene may contain three rolls.
Therefore, if you posed for two scenes and the photographer shot two rolls for each of scene, expect only four usable photos from the entire day. If you posed for three scenes, you end up with six photos. The rest are discarded.

Many photos are not considered because they:

  • Are not in focus
  • Are incorrectly exposed
  • Involve a pose idea that was tried but just doesn't look appealing on film
  • a photo that inadvertedly captured the male model blinking or giving an unflattering expression

Some Male Models Want Every Photo to Be Perfect

Some male models who are perfectionists are disappointed if every photo is not flattering. When models concentrate on the rejects instead of the gems, they feel bad. If you understand that you only need one good photo shoot from the roll, and expect to discard most of the roll, you will not be disappointed. Your goal should be to obtain a few high-quality photos, not hundreds of images. Remember, you only need one good photo - so forget about the duds.
