When a photographer aims his camera lens so it only shows the top half of the model, it is called cropping the model.

What is Cropping the Model?

Cropping is often used to center a model in a photo or eliminate unneeded elements of a photo. For example, perhaps a photographer picks this photo in which the model is not centered. He can cut off part of the photo to make the model appear to be centered.

In this photo, we can see a hand, so the hand is "cropped off."

Cropping also can be used to avoid showing frontal nudity when a male model is nude.

Some photographers have a model stand nude, but do not show the model below the top of his pubic hair. The model might be naked in the studio, but the camera lens only shows his body from the waist up.

The photographer positions his camera so only the top half of the model's body will be visible in the photo.

The goal is to tease anyone looking at the finished photo. They know the model was nude at the time of the shoot, but cannot see frontal nudity.

This model was standing nude in front of the camera, but nothing below the model's waist is seen in this photo.
