Resume Writing Services

Okay, you're graduating this year and it's time to start looking for a job.  You may be feeling stuck in that Catch-22 that gets many recent grads: you can't get a job without experience and you can't get experience without a job.  Well, you may actually have more experience than you think.  You just need somebody to help you present it.

A lot of employers look for what they call transferrable skills, and not just when it comes to younger workers. The way the economy has been, a lot of older adults have been trying to change careers, which puts them in the "no experience" category right along with you.  Resume writers advise them to make a list of the skills needed in the type of job they want, and you should start there, too.  So if your degree is in accounting and you want to be an auditor, what skills do auditors need?  Or videographers? Or biochemists?

Next, make a list of the skills you have that match up with the job you want.  Don't limit yourself to technical skills or knowledge.  Employers place a high value on people skills, too.  If you're good at persuading people, or comforting them, or training them, put that on your list.

Saying you have certain abilities is not enough, though.  So now make a list of accomplishments that demonstrate your skills.  Maybe you negotiated with the administration to get more bike racks on campus.  Maybe you were on a team that won an engineering contest.  Captain of an intramural softball team? Whatever you've accomplished, write that down.

Now you have the basics you'll need for a decent resume. If you want to go ahead and write it yourself, take a look at Knock 'em Dead Resumes: How to Write a Killer Resume That Gets Interviews.  It's available on Amazon and includes lots of advice related to job hunting, too.

An easier and possibly more effective option is to go to your college's career counseling office and get some help with writing your resume.  There are different types of resume for different jobs and styles go in and out of fashion.  It's safer to consult a professional than to do it on your own.  You can hire a resume-writing service (just google it), but be prepared to pay several hundred dollars for a service your college probably provides free.
