College Newspapers

Reading your college newspaper is a great way to keep up with what's going on around campus. You can probably find the newspaper free at various spots around campus, starting with the student union, and many college newspapers are also published online.

The newspaper is written mostly by journalism students who are training to be "real" reporters, so in addition to covering routine items like sports competitions and university board meetings, reporters and student editors will sometimes work on investigative journalism pieces. If there's a controversy at your school, expect it to be covered in the student newspaper. For example, the editor of a relatively small student newspaper in Ohio sued the administration for access to campus crime reports when the college refused to provide them.

Look at the advertising in addition to the news coverage. You can skip ads for credit cards and drinking establishments, but watch for the ads that announce on-campus events, especially those that relate to your major.

Speaking of your major, consider writing for the college newspaper, either as a guest columnist or via a letter-to-the-editor. If you author a guest column related to your major (perhaps an opinion column on meal plan choices by a nutrition major), you can include it as a publication on your resume.
If you want to get really involved in the college newspaper, go to amazon.com and order The Student Newspaper Survival Guide. It's full of good information about journalism in the digital environment.
