Acting Auditions Require Short Notice
Actors and male models often are not given much advance notice for auditions.
For example, if a photographer has a last minute opening, he might contact us and if we say "John" at Indiana State can do this job and we can email you a copy if his airline reservation by tomorrow morning, the photographer will probably be receptive to hiring John. The trouble is, from John's point of view, he is getting a phone call, given very little info about the modeling job and must accept or pass on the job immediately. Even though the job might be a week or two in the future, the airline ticket must be booked immediately, so we can show the photographer John is serious. Otherwise, the photographer will hire some other guy.
In the above scenario, we often hear, "If you would have given me more notice." However, most Model Jobs are filled with little advance notice. If you live in a city outside of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago or Miami (in other words: a small town for modeling) you have a strike against you. Travel does not need to be arranged for a guy who lives in the same city as where the modeling job will be photographed. So, those guys are naturals for being more functionally available.
Even if you lived in a city in which tons of models are hired, you would seldom be given a huge amount of time to decide to take a modeling job. The shoot might occur a week after the final audition (called a "call back").
Last Minute Gives Chance for Big Break
Often a new guy can get his first "break" by being booked for a modeling job at the last minute. Another male model might have been booked and needed to be replaced. So, an eager new guy can swoop in and get a golden opportunity that wasn't normally available to him.
Don't Make Travel a Big Deal
Guys who do not travel a lot make a big deal out of traveling. A guy from Michigan might only be visiting the city for one night, but will treat the trip like it is his annual trip to Spring Break, packing tons of stuff and generally putting too much effort into a one day trip.
So, if you are a college guy trying to get in a fitness magazine, if offered a job, you need to be able to accept it. There will likely be more notice once your career takes off and you are more successful. In the meantime, you need to go with the flow and make things happen... And not request more time.
